This lovely photo of The Art Shop marquee was taken in March of 1989. Lenny and I had just purchased The Art Shop from his dad, Stan Dolin, who had owned it since 1964. My, how young we were! Lenny has less hair now (a lot less) and I no longer have a hideous perm.
I’m posting this marquee memory for a reason – to announce our retirement effective February 28.
Ironically, we are leaving to allow us to concentrate on Lenny’s health. I say ironically, because it was his dad’s battle with cancer that prompted him to sell The Art Shop to us and we now find ourselves in a similar position. Fighting cancer has become a full time job and with the help of the staff of Bowman Gray Cancer Center, that is what we intend to do.
Our newest marquee reads “Welcome, Andy McAfee.” But Andy’s been here for 18 years as Gallery Director, you say. Yes, but now Andy will be The Art Shop’s new Owner and President.
We are extremely happy to turn over the reigns to Andy and thrilled our 116-year-old art and framing gallery will continue even though the Dolin name will not be associated with it for the first time in 51 years. (We thought about adopting him, but we’re too young to have a kid his age.) He has been an integral part of The Art Shop since he joined us in 1997. He is largely responsible for the tremendous growth we have experienced. He even helped design the gallery when we moved from our nearby location 15 years ago and he knows this business inside and out. We are confident Andy will continue to provide the expert customer service for which The Art Shop has always been known.
Janelle DiLizio, Chris Taylor and Will Hawkins will continue in their roles in sales, marketing, production and design. They are the loveliest group of people you could ever hope to have working for you – kind, loyal, dedicated and extremely talented. For 26 years, The Art Shop has been our second home and the staff our second family.
This is a photo from our last staff meeting as owners taken just this morning Feb. 27th. From L-R is Will Hawkins, New owner Andy McAfee, newly retired owners Arlene and Lenny Dolin (with our favorite Art Shop dogs, Molly and Emma) Janelle DiLizio and Chris Taylor.
We will greatly miss the daily interaction with you, our valued clients. We have dearly loved helping you beautify your homes with art and framing throughout the years and are honored you entrusted us with your treasures. As Greensboro’s second oldest business, we have many second generation clients and even a few third generation clients. This makes us very proud and grateful. Imagine being surrounded every day by beautiful art and a terrific group of people and you’ll understand why we have loved owning this business.
We are retiring, but we don’t plan to be strangers. You will see us at the terrific shows and events Andy has planned and will plan. We’ll probably drop by occasionally with our resident dogs, Molly and Emma (aka Cujo), so the staff can get their fix.
Please join us in congratulating Andy and wishing him much success in the coming years.
